Impact Supermarket to Small Local Business

A supermarket is a shopping center that retails various customer goods. Especially foods and other household product including clothing. On the other side, Small Local Business is a business activity run by individuals, households, or small business entities. Business competition between Supermarkets and Small Local Businesses has occurred many years ago. However, who is harmed by the existence of this business competition is still unclear.

Firstly, I disagree at some point with some people who think that supermarkets harm Small Local Businesses. Because, In term of business, there will be losses and profits. When you lose, it might be caused by your competitors being better. So, what you need to do is improve your business, do something better than before. It is true that supermarkets cause the availability of goods to decrease as well as the number of consumers.

Secondly, the shortage of goods and customers caused by supermarkets is due to changes in customer tastes. Based on data from research from the Social Monitoring and Early Response Unit(SMERU) research institute, the decline that occurred in small local businesses caused by competition with supermarkets was 41%. In my opinion, the decline that occurs in small local businesses can be overcome in several ways. One of them is by opening online sales via the internet or by becoming a partner of a supermarket.

Thirdly, in this current pandemic, I think the most appropriate solution right now is to open online sales. The obvious reason is that people are more active at home than outside. Because people are more active at home, that way, they will do many things through the internet such as shopping. This is a great opportunity for small local businesses to open online sales. And such a method does not require a large amount of capital. Even because of this pandemic, many supermarkets have had to close due to government regulations. So that their income is reduced, although now they have started to reopen. But with some strict rules, such as visitors must be vaccinated before entering the supermarket.

In conclusion, it is not entirely true that supermarkets cause a decrease in the income of small local businesses. Several aspects that were affected by the decline were customers and goods. The turnover of small local homes also decreased, but not significantly. There are many ways to compete in business. The most important thing is that every small local business has the will to develop its business. Like the solution I mentioned above, which is to become a supermarket partner and open online sales.
